7 Marketing Tips: What the Supermoon Tells Us About Social Marketing

Published by Melissa Madigan, Marketing Coordinator, ACGI Software

This weekend, feast your eyes on 2013’s largest supermoon!

The Huffington Post describes it this way: “Also known as a perigee full moon, the event occurs when a full moon lines up with the Earth and the sun at a specific point in its orbit, called the lunar perigee. That’s the point at which the moon is nearest to Earth as it traces its elliptical path around our planet.”

You’ll be able to catch this supermoon at its finest on Sunday, June 23rd, in the evening when the sun sets. I imagine everyone walking outside and staring up at the sky, much like this photo of Grumpy Cat.

What I find fascinating is the alignment of earth, moon and sun, and how we can relate it to social marketing. In order to market your organization successfully on social media, there needs to be an alignment of strategy, timing, platform and content. A few tips to accomplish this:

1. Research the social networks your audience is most present on. That’s where you should be.

2. Don’t overwhelm yourself. Start out with the “Big 3” – Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn – and progress from there.

3. Follow the trends and # (hashtags)! Know what’s being talked about and use that to your advantage. Show your audience you have similar interests by sharing relevant, valuable content.

4. Don’t overthink it. If you’re on every single social media site and posting content every single hour of the day, that’s overkill. If you find your fans using Facebook, Twitter and Instagram and share creative, engaging content a few times a week, maybe even once a day depending on your business, that’s healthy.

5. Find out when a Tweet chat (#assnchat for example), Google hangout or similar interactive Web event is taking place and connect with participants to build relationships.

6. Make sure your content is engaging and includes a variety of photos, videos and relevant links.

7. Don’t be afraid to explore your options. It’s not “one-size-fits-all”. There’s a big social universe waiting for you to discover!
