Webinar Recap: The Swiss Army Knife of Member Engagement

We’d like to thank Josh Paul, director of strategy for Socious, for sharing his tips of “5 Ways to Increase Non-Dues Revenue Using Your Online Communities and AMS” during our latest webinar last Thursday.

If you missed it, we recorded the webinar. You can access it here.

During this 60-minute session, Josh highlighted why online communities are growing in popularity among associations, steps to take before you can generate revenue, the “5 Ways”, and concluded with success stories from real associations.

If you’re curious, here’s a list of the five ways:

  1. Vendor programs
  2. Sponsorships
  3. Driving attendance
  4. Virtual memberships
  5. Online sales

Vendor programs (aka “partner programs”) –this one really got me thinking… Josh emphasized that in order for your partner program to be successful, it should meet the needs of your members (not just serve the partner’s interests), help educate members and encourage member participation. Yup, it’s all about members!

“Online communities are really the Swiss Army knife of your member engagement strategy. They are an open platform where you can manage all of your member-facing communication in one place,” said Josh.

When it comes to communications, here are some of the online community tools you’ll find useful:

  • Dedicated blogs
  • Controlled access to discussion forums and list servs
  • Dedicated emails
  • Market research surveys
  • Online community and event mobile app advertising
